Gifts from the Territory.
The Northern Territory has been by far the most awe inspiring leg of my journey to date. I’m still in Alice Springs, hanging about for the Desert Festival and know that I will find it extremely difficult to leave this magical place and cross the boarder into South Australia.
A few weeks ago, I was fortunate enough to spend 4 days out bush on a 90km dirt track at a hunting camp where a friend works. They hunt buffalo, wild boar and kangaroo amongst others.
As a devout vegetarian for over 15 years my morals were somewhat challenged landing at the conclusion that this is much more of a humane method of acquiring meat for food than the commercial process the west is so blinkered to and why I am so against it. If you can’t kill it, skin it and prepare it yourself and be connected to the process, don’t eat it.
Over the course of the stay, I collected hundreds of empty bullet cartridges, and was gifted a set of buffalo horn, boars tusks and crocodile teeth all of which I am working into new jewellery. It’s amazing the turn work can take, I never ever contemplated using such materials when I left home, if something feels right, you just have to follow it to the end and see where it takes you.
